With my Triumph TR3 Race Car restoration under control, I turned my attention again to my 1970 VW Beetle project. After much thought, I judged that the most effective way to get the multitude of parts I needed for my vandalized beetle was to buy a donor car.
I found a matching light blue 1970 beetle about 220 miles away in eastern Tennessee. The car was complete and came with a clear title for $2,000. After a challenging trip during which we had to replace all 4 trailer tires following two blowouts on Interstate 40 west of Knoxville, as well as negotiating treacherous mountain terrain, we acquired the donor beetle and returned safely home.
Once we returned, I began disassembling the donor beetle as well as my project beetle. I then sent the project beetle to the local paintless dent removal shop where all dents were removed from the top and both front fenders at a total cost of $600.
With both cars disassembled, it was time to search for a body shop willing to take on this beetle project.
