Fresh off our TR3 Race Car’s successful appearance at the Vintage Triumph Register (VTR) Regional Meet in St. Louis in early June, we set to work to further restore the car in order to enter the autocross event at the VTR Nationals in Nashville, Indiana, from September 8-13.

The first hurdle was to acquire and install a new fuel cell in the car. I purchased a 15-gallon replacement cell whose outside dimensions closely matched the missing original ATL fuel cell. Next I sent the car to the local race car chassis shop to have the passenger side crash bars and headrest bar replaced. Once that was finished, I sanded, added a coat of paint primer, and painted all the new roll bar tubes.

With the fuel cell still out of the car, I serviced the limited slip differential, reconditioned the watts linkage, and repainted the trunk area. Installation of the new fuel cell required modification to the fuel cell hold-down bars and fuel pump mounting brackets. Next we serviced the overdrive transmission and overdrive wiring harness. I was surprised to find that the overdrive still worked. The front and rear brakes needed a bunch of TLC to get them working properly, including new parts and multiple adjustments. Lastly, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator.
